This is an All-Day Roundtrip Drive
(about 450 miles, +/-14 hours) from Phoenix to Petrified Forest Nat. Park . Scenic and rest stops are made along the way.

General Itinerary
Early departure, heading north across the Verde pediment and through the Mazatzal Mts. into the Payson Basin. From there, we climb about 4500ft. from saguaro cactus desert to ponderosa pine forest through the Town of Payson to the top of the Mogollon Rim - the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau.
Continuing through pinion-juniper forests into the Painted Desert and rain shadow of The Rim to Holbrook. From Holbrook we head to the south entrance of Petrified Forest N. P. with the first stop at the Rainbow Forest Museum and Giant Logs Trail, followed by lunch at a near by picnic area (gift shop opportunities at first and last stop).
From there north through the park with stops at Crystal Forest, Blue Mesa, Puerco Ruins & Petroglyphs, Painted Desert overlooks and north entrance visitor center. After leaving the park we will go on a brief tour of historic Holbrook and Rt. 66 before returning to Payson for dinner on your own.
After Dinner in Payson, return to Phoenix.
Total time in The Petrified Forest is 4-5 hours.
